Decorating My Living Room With Slipcovers

What to Do About Ottoman Covers?

I had two ottomans, but I could find no matching ottoman covers for them. It turns out that tailored ottoman covers are very expensive, astonishingly so. Cheap ones just look ugly. I, therefore, decided to buy one extra loveseat slipcover and to sew two ottoman covers out of it.

What to Do When You Get the Slipcovers?

When the slipcovers arrived, I looked at them all folded in the packaging and felt really disappointed.

The flowers were bigger and brighter than I expected. The fabric looked more brown. I decided to open one slipcover only and proceed with interior decorating my living room as if the slipcover was my perfect choice. I first took a picture of the chair before the slipcover makeover, then I ironed the slipcover carefully until it looked stiff and more like upholstery.

I then installed the slipcover on the chair. When I was finished, I took an “after” picture and left the room for a while. I compared the images on my computer and saw that the chair looked really dingy before. Now, on the other hand, it looked fresh and pretty.

So I took the next interior decorating step—I returned to the living room with a fresh perspective, to look not just at the slipcovered chair but at the whole room. The slipcover was growing on me. It was safe to open another and continue. The end result was beautiful and fresh.

I rearranged my furniture in the room to compliment the new style of decorating the slipcover gave to the living room. Today it is my favorite room in the house.

Sew a Matching Ottoman Slipcover for Your Living Room

When I decorated my living with slipcovers, I realized that ottoman slipcovers present a serious problem, unless you’re willing to sew your own. Sofa slipcovers can usually be found in loveseat size and chair sizes. But ottoman slipcovers are not available as part of the set.  Here's how I sewed 2 matching ottoman slipcovers from one loveseat slipcover.
