Warm bedroom makeover with paint

Warm Bedroom Makeover with Paint

With a few buckets of paint you can give a drab, worn bedroom a stunning makeover from floor to ceiling.

You don't have to buy new furniture to give your room a bedroom makeover. With simple steps, you can paint your existing furniture. You can then paint the walls to match. Finally, you can complement your colors with fresh, charming bedding. Here's a handful of ideas to inspire your warm bedroom makeover.

Paint Your Bed

Regardless of whether your bed is made from wood, wrought-iron, wicker or plastic, you can paint the frame to give your bed a makeover.

Begin by painting the frame with water-based primer. I prefer this step over sanding the surface down in preparation for painting. Once dry, the primer (which looks like white paint) will help a top layer of paint adhere to the surface.

Paint the bed frame in a warm shade that will complement your bedroom makeover. For example, a navy blue bed goes well in a warm burgundy bedroom makeover. White would go well with sage walls, as black will compliment sandy walls.

Paint an Accent Wall

You don't have to paint every wall as part of your warm bedroom makeover. Instead, paint the wall behind the bed in a striking hue, such as burgundy, purple or blue.

Next, paint the remaining walls of the room in a softer hue of the same color group. This will keep the room feeling bright, without clashing with your accent wall.

Alternatively, paint the walls in a pale independent shade, which you wish to add to your rooms palette. So, for example, paint the walls in sand color to go with your burgundy accent wall. Then use sand colored bedding in the next step of your warm bedroom makeover.

Decorate with Charming Bedding

While your warm bedroom makeover calls for dark hues in your furniture and walls, the bedding should be kept light as a contrast.

To save money, look for a beautiful duvet to cover your existing comforter or blankets. If you can find a pattern in the fabric which embraces the contrast colors of the room, you'll achieve harmony in your bedroom decor.

So, for example, if your wall is burgundy and the bed is blue, choose white bedding embroidered with red and blue flowers.

Paint Additional Decorative Items

If you have an old side table or chest of drawers, paint them to match your bed frame.

You can also enhance the beauty of your warm bedroom makeover with wicker baskets. Buy big lidded baskets at a craft store. Paint them to match your wall or your bed frame. Then store items in the baskets, which will also decorate your room.

Add a Splash of Warmth

Complete your warm bedroom makeover with a decorating trick I learned from a design magazine. Find a simple garden bench at a garden center. Paint the bench in a bright, warm color, which you have not yet introduced into the room. (So, for example, in our burgundy blue room, paint the bench in yellow).

Next, lay a yellow comforter folded at the foot of the bed. The comforter will form a yellow stripe over the bedding, which will tie the bed with the bench.

This final splash of color will give your warm bedroom makeover a designer feel!
