Before-and-After Summer Garden Makeover

There’s nothing like a summer garden. Even if you only have a small patch of land you can turn it into your blooming garden retreat. But the one thing I hate about gardening is how quickly nature takes over again and wipes away hours of work.

This year, I tackled the creation of my summer garden a little differently. I didn’t have money to spend on many new plants. I didn’t have time to spend gardening for hours. And I had a lot of winter damage from an especially wet season. Here’s what I did.

Taking a step back from my front yard, I imagined what my summer garden will look like without the bushes blocking the front, or the hedge collapsing slowly and rotting in places. Then I decided to be daring. I decided to cut them down.

In this article you can see some of my before and after pictures. Cutting down old, overgrown vegetation played a major part in giving my summer garden its landscaped, trimmed look.

The old hedge that lined the backyard fence was removed. Wild bushes were trimmed down to let sunlight into the back of the yard and the side patio. I build a cheap rose trellis for my roses (here’s how), and then gave my summer garden curves and clear borders.

The borders are easy to create if you use mulch. I ordered 10 square yards of mulch (a square yard is equivalent to 9 feet of garden landscaping). I wanted to lay the mulch over tarp to prevent the re-growth of weeds. And I wanted the mulch to remain thick through the seasons, even after rain and foot traffic.
