Create Affordable Shabby Chic Decor

Using cheap craft store frames, I created charming shabby chic wall decor

At my favorite craft store I found cheap 4x6 wooden frames on sale for a $1 each. I decided to create affordable shabby chic home decor for my kitchen.

Once I got started, however, I ended up creating homemade shabby chic decor for my bathroom, craft room (which doubles as my home office) and my basement. In short, I had so much fun creating Shabby Chic decor, I couldn't stop myself.

Here are a few of my ideas for creating affordable shabby chic home decor. I hope you'll be inspired to come up with even more ideas. After all, half the fun is in the creative process.

Homemade Sewing Shabby Chic Decor

My husband bought rags at a closeout, which he used for cleaning his guns. I was immediately inspired to create Shabby Chic decor from these stunning rags.

I wrapped the fabric around the back of the picture frame, then I cut the excess fabric and used duct tape to secure the fabric in place.

Next I used crazy glue to adhere pretty sewing supplies to the framed fabric. As you can see, there's no rules to creating Shabby Chic decor. Just go with whatever strikes your fancy.

Homemade Floral Shabby Chic Decor

I looked in my fabric basket and fished out a beautiful floral fabric left over from a skirt I sewed last year. I decided to create affordable Shabby Chic decor with it.

I began by gluing a few buttons on the fabric, although you can sew them on too if you prefer. Then I wrapped the fabric around the back of the picture frame, cut the ends and secured everything with duct tape.

If you like this idea for homemade Shabby Chic decor, you can use different buttons, such as ones shaped like flowers or cute animals or whatever. That's the beauty of creating your own affordable Shabby Chic decor--you can customize it to your fancy.

Homemade Kitchen Towel Shabby Chic Decor

Of all the Shabby Chic decor I made, this one is my absolute favorite. All I did was take charming kitchen towels and wrap them around the back of the frame.

Because the towels were new, they were still pretty and not yet worn. I cut any excess towel at the back of the frame, then used duct tape to secure everything in place.

To create your very own affordable Shabby Chic decor, visit a drug store, where you'll find super cheap, charming kitchen towels. Frame them in craft store frames and you're done!

Tip for Creating Weathered Shabby Chic Frames

If you can't find wooden craft store frames, you can use plastic ones or other types of cheap frames. But before you create Shabby Chic decor out of these cheap frames, you might want to weather the frames and give them a Shabby Chic finish.

First prime the frames with water-based primer, which looks like white paint. Once the primer dries, paint the frames in crackled finish paint. Finally, when this paint dries too, sand the edges of the frames a little to reveal the white under-coat, as if your homemade Shabby Chic decor had been worn over many years.

Finally, you can also find cheap frames at dollar stores, thrift stores or flea markets. I wish you luck and happiness with creating your very own affordable Shabby Chic decor.
