Build a kitchen wall spice rack
How to Build
A Kitchen Wall Spice Rack
Build a spice rack to fit over your backsplash, instead of keeping your spices on your countertop

Begin your wall spice rack by building the shelf for it. The wall spice rack shelf will sit on your backsplash, and will be custom-sized to fit that space. Typically the backsplash is flanked by kitchen cabinets on both sides, so measure that space available for your wall spice rack shelf.

Next, at your local lumber yard or home improvement store, buy a plank of wood in the right shelf depth (at least six inches). Have the store cut it to the measurements of your wall spice rack shelf. Or for a more ornate wall spice rack shelf by a mantle shelf and cut it down to size.

Kitchen Wall Spice Rack Installation

The wall spice rack shelf can be installed with shelf brackets below or above the shelf, depending on your preference. Ornamental metal shelf brackets are best for this project, although you can use wood shelf brackets and paint them to match your kitchen. If you are using a mantle shelf the installation is internal to the shelf and comes with it. If you need to drill holes into tile to install your wall spice rack shelf, be sure to use ceramic drill bits to avoid cracking the tile.

Kitchen Wall Spice Rack Finish

Since your wall spice rack will hang conveniently over your stove, you can match it's finish to the stovetop. For stainless steel, use Rust Oleum stainless steel paint, which will replicate the same finish as your modern appliance (this is especially beautiful when the wall spice rack hangs beneath the stainless steel vent). For a country finish, consider the Rust Oleum's crackled finish paint. Or to match your backsplash, glue tiles to the shelf surface, then paint the edges in high gloss finish. And for a more ornate edge, glue ornamental wood blocks to the edge of your wall spice rack shelf, to create a sophisticated finish.

Use your wall spice rack to hold other articles you use regularly during cooking.
